CHOW HANG arrested for organizing demonstration to honor victims of Tiananmen crackdown
A bright student at a top university, Chow could have gone on to all kinds of high-ranking careers. Instead, she dedicated her life to fearlessly protecting people's rights as a lawyer and human rights activist.
Chow was the vice president of the Hong Kong Alliance, which organized the world's largest candlelight vigil in honor of victims of the Tiananmen crackdown. In 1989, hundreds – possibly thousands – of people were killed in the streets around Tiananmen Square in Beijing when troops opened fire, killing demonstrators peacefully calling for economic and social reform.
The Chinese government wants people to forget, but Chow has made it his mission to remember the victims.
In 2020 and 2021, Hong Kong authorities banned the vigil, citing public health reasons related to the Covid-19 pandemic. On June 4, 2021, Chow encouraged people on social media to remember repression by lighting candles. She was arrested that day for "unauthorized montage advertising or disclosure".
Chow is now serving 22 months in prison for peacefully remembering victims of a terrible crackdown. She is also facing yet another indictment for allegedly endangering national security through her completely peaceful actions. In the face of it all, Chow's bravery shines through. “To say I'm not afraid would be a lie, but I'm not so afraid that I don't dare to do anything,” she says.
