Operation investigates the general's interference in statements linked to a coup plot and the exchange of deleted messages with General Mauro Cid
247 – Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), authorized the Federal Police (PF) to access content stored in the "cloud" belonging to General Braga Netto and his advisor, Flávio Peregrino. The information was initially released by the newspaper O Globo. The decision was made within the scope of an operation launched this Saturday, which also included search and seizure warrants and the preventive arrest of the former Minister of the Civil House and Defense.
Braga Netto is suspected of trying to interfere in the investigations into a coup plot, focusing on monitoring the statements of Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid, former aide-de-camp to former President Jair Bolsonaro. The Federal Police indicate that messages exchanged between Braga Netto and General Mauro Lourena Cid, Mauro Cid's father, were deleted the day after they were sent, in August 2023, three days before an operation investigating the alleged embezzlement of presidential jewelry. The PF is seeking to recover this content to clarify the case.
The Federal Police representation highlighted the need for "immediate access and exploration of the content of cell phones, as well as the content located in 'clouds' that are located in the locations". Moraes accepted the request and ordered the access and analysis of computers, seized devices and electronic files, including recorded communications.
Defense denies accusations
Through his defense, Braga Netto stated that the suspicions are unfounded. In a statement, he declared that "it was never a coup, much less a plan to assassinate someone" and reinforced that "he has always prioritized ethical and moral correctness in the search for legal and constitutional solutions".
The operation conducted by the Federal Police is part of a broader investigation involving alleged acts of fraud and possible misappropriation of public assets. Analysis of the seized electronic data may provide new information about the schemes and possible irregularities committed by those involved.
The case is still under investigation, and the information recovered may be crucial to the advancement of the case.
